Reflection:

Day 1

Using GPS for the first time was rather too difficult for all of us. A lot of information was given to us in just one sitting, and we felt that it was so hard to catch up with the others. But despite all the obstacles and hardships that we faced, we managed as group to work on the tasks assigned to us successfully. We believed that completing the tasks was due to teamwork and our competitive nature.

Day 2

Today, we felt we did a great job in exploring and using the GPS. Unlike the first session, we finished early and ahead of the others though we felt the activities for this session were more difficult and complicated. Using the GPS for the second time made us feel more confident and comfortable on this technology. Modesty aside, we feel that when we face our colleagues and students, we can show them that we are an authority on this technology.

Today, we felt more relaxed because we knew what to expect. We felt that we have mastered the use of the GPS and we were glad that the weather was very cooperative, and our facilitators were very talented and capable.

Classroom Application

Day 1

When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?

It would be a great group activity to build teamwork for the beginning of the year. I would limit the number of caches because of time element and to alleviate discipline problems.

How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?

Train teachers by familiarizing them with the GPS and its uses. Brainstorm activities to use the GPS in their own area of study. Remind them to plan lessons appropriate for their students' developmental level.

Day 2

When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?

We will use this strategy at the very start of the school year. This will not only be a very good team building activity for our students but also a good integration of Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students need to practice their skills on hands-on measurement, coordinates, identifying plants and animals in their own backyard.

How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?

We will go through the Tree Finder guide with the teachers in our schools to make them more familiar with the trees in their own backyard. We will do hands-on activities using the tools to measure the height, width, circumference, diameter, and board feet of the trees.

Most Intriguing Thing About Today...

Day 1

What was intriguing for me was the use of the GPS. At first I thought GPS was just for drivers and that its only use was to give directions. With this conference, I realized that GPS can also be used for classroom instruction particularly on the field of science (nature study) and social studies (latitude and longitude, map skills, compass skills).

Day 2

For the Yellow team, we got back on time and we're not stressed. We felt it was so overwhelming to know that there were a lot of trees that were similar in many ways and that made our day not only intruiging but also challenging.
