Reflection:

Day 1

Hot, hot, hot!  Ticks, ticks, ticks!  We were pleasantly surprised to discover that we were receiving a very nice digital camera along with our GPS kit.  None of us knew anything about geocashing before today, and we can't wait until our lives slow down enough to allow time for us to actually try it!  Using the GPS to find specific locations was quite the ordeal ... we finished last, but we managed to locate all of our waypoints.  We should probably win the award for making the biggest mess when we used the plaster of paris to make our animal print molds.

Day 2

Another exciting day!  We had to relocate from the Dismal Swamp to ECSU because of the smoke from the Dismal Swamp fire.  We spent the morning learning about tree identification ... and we learned how to use some incredible identification tools like a tree borer, a Doyle Rule and a tangent to determine tree height.  We started out on our first quest but had to surrender due to an untimely thunderstorm.  Wait ... there's a break in the storm ... we're off to continue our quest...  We managed to complete two of our quests completely on our own (without a coach)!

Photo Day 1

We spent the majority of our time searching high and low for our hidden treasures...this picture shows us discovering one of our clues beneath the deck.

Classroom Application

Day 1

When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?

We will try to incorporate the GPS with other subject areas ... like working out math problems and searching for the answers.

How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?

We will try to create a mini-version of today's activities...and send them on a quest of some sort so they can implement what they learn.

Day 2

When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?

We will use the tools we received today to incorporate GPS with measurement and estimation.

How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?

We will have them complete mini-quests that require them to use the many different tools.

Most Intriguing Thing About Today...

Day 1

We were surprised by a crazy looking red velvet ant ... it was moving so fast we couldn't get a good picture of it!

Day 2

Learning how to bore a tree with the dangerous tool we received was extremely interesting...it was neat to be able to determine the age of the tree and see whether or not there were any rotten areas inside the tree.

Additional Comments --

We received lots of cool instruments and tools, but we are still trying to figure out how to incorporate all of it within our classrooms due to time constraints.

Wow, what a hot and exciting day it was! Orange Team, you did an outstanding job completing your quest for the day. I look forward to working with you in Day 2 of our quest. Be sure to explore your GPS unit over the next few weeks and bring any questions you have to our next Indiana Jones Quest.
