Reflection:
Day 1
Despite the bugs and the heat, we learned a great deal about the GPS and where X marked the spot. We worked together as a team to locate many animal caches. We actually finished first even though we all were exhausted by the heat.
Day 2
Because of the smoke, the location was changed to ECSU instead the Dismal Swamp. We started out with a great introduction to tree identity and how to identify them by odor, location, shape, and size. Next we learned about the tools needed to measure tree height, diameter, and age. After a wonderful lunch, we headed out for some more caching. It started out great--nice breeze and all, then a streak of lightning sent us running back for shelter to Griffin Hall.

Classroom Application
Day 1
When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?
The GPS can be used to teach steps to problem solving in math, latitude and longitude and relative location, and measurement.
Students can also determine which animal cannot exist in a particular location based on the vegetation or lack of in that environment.
How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?
Meet with the principal/administration to discuss purchasing a classroom set or more of the GPS. Meet with teachers on a workday to get teachers to become comfortable with the GPS. Allow teachers to come up with ideas on how the GPS can be used.
Day 2
When you return to school in the fall, how will you use what you learned today in your classroom?
Our group will provide staff development for faculty and students. We will create a Wiki web page and upload teacher created activities.
How will you use what you learned today to train the teachers in your school?
During staff meetings we will introduce tools (tree measuring tools) followed by staff development to provide group hands-on activites (per grade level)
Most Intriguing Thing About Today...
Day 1
How much fun it was to use a GPS device. We felt like kids again!
Day 2
How difficult it was to identify trees even with step by step instructions
Additional Comments --

What a hot day it was! And, you guys did an outstanding job working as a team and seeing it through to the end despite 100 degree weather. I'm looking forward to working with you in two weeks on our second day of the GPS Nature Quest.
